More at 11...

I've been working piecemeal on a lengthier entry about the protests surrounding the cartoons of Muhammad that I'm sure you've all heard about, but until I manage to get it in readable shape, I want to quickly ask that anyone who does not support the artists 100% to please pull their heads out of the sand. Thank you.

There's some staggering hypocrisy at work in the cartoons, and the discourse around them. First of all, a brief genealogy of German antisemitism/fascism/nazism will reveal that a good deal of it began with (you guessed it) cartoons.

Additionally, Europeans just hailed the jail sentence handed to a British historian who denied the existence of ovens at Nazi camps 17 years ago, but has since recanted that position, and has a number of columnists/writers sitting in jails for published work of an antisemitic flavor. It makes perfect sense that Muslims would be outraged at the chasm between such realities, and the publication "in solidarity" of images of Mohammed with a bomb for a turban. Let us not forget, of course, Europe's rather ugly history with Muslims in Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, etc. Which is not to speak of recent European complicity in atrocities and humiliations in the Muslim world.

When Muslims are treated to the daily cadence of reports of fellow Muslims being tortured, forced to drink out of toilets at gunpoint, and urinated on by soldiers in Gitmo tapping the crosses mounted to their chests, saying "This is a gift from Christ"...

The idea that those same palefaced meances would put their disproportionate power to work portraying Muslims as violent, murderous, etc...

Yeah, we're all real lucky it's only been a few weeks of protests. You heard it here at M.A. first, kids:

We do this because we can.
