Lomans fear their Willies

Right-wing legislative entity Sam Brownback, who chairs the Senate Commerce subcommittee on science, recently convened a commission to look into the problem of pornography addiction. In addition to concerns about children's exposure to explicit materials, he offered this compelling piece of anecdotal evidence:

Some of his middle-age male friends limit their time alone in hotel rooms to avoid the temptation of graphic pay-per-view movies, Brownback said.

All joking aside, this is a problem that needs to be rubbed out at once, and no man should be asked to have to handle it alone.

I have to say, though, that these gentlemen who are willing to shell out exorbitant hotel pay-per-view fees for salacious fare are in for some some real trouble should they ever be introduced to cutting edge technologies such as . . . laptops and wireless internet. Hopefully before that happens, they'll be able to, um, get ahold of themselves.

it's shitty/sad because, obviously, the jesus freak conception of morality is not the issue here, but rather what (popular mainstream) porn consumption says about men and masculinity, and why congress should be investigating addiction to patriarchy/masculinity.

all of which has been lucidly articulated elsewhere. not that that perspective is going to make it to salon.com anytime soon...

First of all, let me say that I did have second thoughts about littering a post about addiction with juvenile double entendres, but obviously they weren't particularly strong second thoughts. For better or for worse. Anyway...

I started to write a longer response, but I'll keep it short. Jensen's a good writer, and I'm not unsympathetic with his perspective, but he filters the topic through too few prisms for my liking. He's too dismissive of intellectual critiques (the "high-theory crowd") of the second-wave anti-porn approach, which are articulated by not a few thoughtful radical women. And frankly it is they I would prefer to hear from.
